ANTHONY GEARY is leaving “General Hospital”when his contract is up.  He’s played Luke Spencer on the show for 37 years, on and off, and won eight Emmys for it.  His first stint was from 1978 to 1984.  He came back in 1993, and has been on the show ever since.  He’ll keep working through June, and his final episode is expected to air in July.  Anthony turns 68 next month..Not surprisingly, he has a melodramatic reason for wanting to walk away now . . .quote, “I’m just weary of the grind and have been for 20 years.  I really don’t want to die, collapsing in a heap, on [the] set one day.  That wouldn’t be too poetic.”

The “Luke and Laura” love story is easily one of the most famous storylines in soap opera history.  It was pretty controversial too, because it started with a drunken rape, and ended in marriage. Of course, in soap operas NOTHING is permanent.  The show says, quote, “The door will always be open, and we hope that he’ll make a return visit at some point, even if it’s just for a few weeks.”
