Bob Costas: Caitlyn Jenner’s ESPYs Courage Award Is “Tabloid Play”
BOB COSTAS does NOT think CAITLYN JENNER should be honored with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs . . . because it strikes him as a, quote, “crass exploitation play . . . a tabloid play.”
“However, it strikes me that awarding the Arthur Ashe award to Caitlyn Jenner is just a crass exploitation play. It’s a tabloid play. In the broad world of sports, I’m pretty sure they could have found—and this is not anything against Caitlyn Jenner—I’m pretty sure they could have found someone who was much closer to actively involved in sports, who would have been deserving of what that award represents.”
That’s not a bad argument . . . but it would be better if the ESPYs didn’t have a history of straying from people “closer to being actively involved in sports.”
In addition to other retired sports figures, Nelson Mandela has won the award . . . as has Robin Roberts, three survivors of the September 11th terrorist attacks, and a hero who died trying to save students in the Columbine shooting.
Obviously, a “Kardashian” PALES in comparison to those people . . . but on the other hand, there was a time when Bruce Jenner was arguably the biggest athlete in America.
And so, witnessing one of the most famous athletes of the 20th century publicly transitioning can be considered a big and important sports story.
Regardless, this isn’t a Nobel Peace Prize, this is the ESPYs . . . so let’s not get TOO crazy.
