Will Ben Affleck Lose “Batman” Because Of His Addiction Issues

Ben Affleck’s role in Batman has long been in question and now his stint in rehab may sink it. But not for the reason you may think: the cost of insurance has gotten too high, experts tell gossips sources.

Affleck checked himself into rehab last week for the third time in the last two decades, and the second time in a little more than a year, which may price him out of movies like The Batman.

“More than likely the studio will replace him because the insurance costs are going to go through the roof,” a representative for a completion bond company said.

The insider said that insurers, at a minimum, may demand half of the film’s budget to be set aside as escrow, which could quickly add up as the production budget on Justice League was $300 million (that would drive the budget for a Justice League sequel up to $450 million, before marketing expenses). In the late 90s and early 2000s, Robert Downey Jr. faced similar issues because of his substance abuse issues. Robert Altman ended up gambling on him and hiring him sans insurance, a big risk. Later, Mel Gibson had to pay Downey’s insurance bond himself so he could appear in 2003’s The Singing Detective. Insiders say the route back to mainstream Hollywood may be via the indies, a la Downey, who has enjoyed massive commercial success again with Iron Man, after proving himself again.
