Mix Mornings BOOK CLUB: Week 2
Jay’s review #2: Lincoln In The Bardo by George Saunders
George Saunders is more known as a short-story author, so when he released his first novel Lincoln in the Bardo in 2017 the literary world was pretty excited. I finally picked it up last week and read it in 2 days, it is SO hard to put down… and also a little hard to read (at first). It surrounds a very monumental night in U.S. history, right before the civil war was about to get REALLY bloody, when Abraham Lincoln had to bury his young son who died of typhoid. This book will haunt you forever, much like the ghosts you meet along the journey.
Tori’s review #2: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
This book. This author. UGH.
Taylor Jenkins Reid has so quickly become my favorite author. She tells stories of slightly familiar celebrity scandals in such a compelling way, we all end up Googling every tiny detail for accuracy. It really is all fiction, but it’s always feels real. Evelyn Hugo is an incredible love story that spans decades. It jumps back and forth between telling the story of a beloved Hollywood star in real-time, to the present when she details the stories to a biographer. Believe me, you don’t expect it to be a love story, but by the end you’re fiercely rooting for a forbidden kind of love. And it’s LGBTQ+ friendly, which is a bonus for me 🙂
