Mix Mornings BOOK CLUB – Week 6
Jay’s Book – Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy
This book is incredible, but I’m not going to recommend it for everyone. It is brutal, bloody, remorseless, and bludgeons you with one horrific event after another through the American west in 1849. It’s incredible. You also meet absolutely one of the most unforgettable characters in any book you will ever read. The judge. Prepare to think about this guy every day for weeks after you finish this book.

Tori’s Book – The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
This is my Black History Month read, and it was everything the reviews promised it to be. It’s beautiful – heartbreaking, nauseating, uplifting, tear-jerking, all of it. It’s set in the 1800s when slavery was very much intact, i.e. in Southern U.S. states. It tells the story of Cora, a cotton worker who escapes her plantation in search of a better life via the Underground Railroad. I do have to warn, the book contains some detailed narration of the WORST treatment and punishment any human could experience. There were a few times I had to put it down because it made me feel sick, but that’s why it’s so important that we keep reading. I’m excited to read more of this author’s work!
